5 Things to do in Outer Banks on a Rainy Day

No matter what time of the year you're visiting the Outer Banks, you may end up experiencing an afternoon or two of rain. While the Outer Banks gets roughly 200 days of sunshine, it's always a good idea to prepare with a few ideas for days spend inside. Luckily, there are plenty of things to do in the Outer Banks on a rainy day. 

Wild Horse Museum

The Wild Horse Museum is located in Old Corolla Village and is open year-round for visitors to learn about the iconic animals. The museum features interactive exhibits, an area map of where the horses live, and more. Operated by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, this family-friendly museum is perfect for animal lovers wanting to know more about the wild Spanish mustangs that live along the beaches of the Currituck Outer Banks.

Island Book Store

If time spent perusing aisles of books brings you joy, you must make a stop at the Island Book Store. This independent bookstore in Kitty Hawk has a wide collection of books on all different types of subjects and genres. You'll find fiction, cookbooks, history books, crafts, poetry, sportsbooks, biographies, and local information.

North Carolina Aquarium

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island has a variety of exhibits that highlight the area's local aquatic creatures and habitats. You can view exhibits that feature alligators, sea turtles, river otters, stingrays, jellyfish, sharks, and more. 

On days that aren't too rainy, you can also explore the Soundside Pier and outdoor grounds at the North Carolina Aquarium.

Take an Art Class

Get a bit creative while you're at the beach! There are several art galleries and studios along the Outer Banks that offer art classes and painting nights. Studio 12, Local Color, Pea Island Art, and Hang 12 Art are a few of the local spots where you can take an art class. There are several big shopping centers to spend the entire afternoon, including the TimBuck II Shipping Village in Corolla, the Outlets in Nags Head, the Hatteras Landing Shopping Center, Surfside Plaza, and the Scarborough Faire Shopping Village.
