Spend a Day in Cape Hatteras National Seashore
With the Atlantic Ocean all around, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is among the most peaceful places in the Outer Banks. This is a protected piece of land maintained by the National Parks Service and is one of only 10 in the nation. Cape Hatteras has a rich maritime history including shipwrecks and rescues. The treacherous waters around Cape Hatteras are why the lighthouse was necessary in the first place and you can go learn more about it and see the wonder for yourself.
As you're planning your visit, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers many fun things to do throughout your day including relaxing on the beach, exploring the various lighthouses in the area, and hiking around to see the natural beauty. Here are some fun things to do at Cape Hatteras National Seashore that will give you and your family a great day out.
Fun in (or out of) the Sun on the Beaches
There are more than 70 miles of beaches in Cape Hatteras National Seashore that are open for your use. You can find a nice, secluded to spot to lay out and enjoy building sandcastles, dipping in the ocean, or just work on your tan. These beaches are protected and maintained in excellent condition and it's a fun way to experience a nationally protected piece of land.
Beach fires are also permitted during various times throughout the year. You can learn more on the National Parks Service website, but just make sure to have your free permit handy and enjoy a relaxing bonfire on the beach to end your day!
Climb the Lighthouses
Although the Cape Hatteras lighthouse is currently undergoing some restoration, you can still climb the Bodie Island Lighthouse to see the view from the top. This fun and memorable trip will surely be a crowd pleaser for the whole family. Equal to about 10 stories, make sure you have your walking shoes ready to go all the way up the steps on your own as there are no elevators present. It's about 200 steps to the top but totally worth it!
Go for a Hike
If you've had enough of the beach, there are several trails available for you to explore and see the other parts of nature on the barrier islands. These trails will take you through the woods and brush so that you can enjoy the wildlife and sights that aren't just the beach. The Buxton Woods Trail and the Hammock Hills Trail are both about 3/4 mile loops that are great for beginners. If you're up for more of a challenge, Open Ponds Trail is a 4.5 mile one-way trip and 9 miles out and back if you want to see even more of the islands. Explore dunes, salt marshes, and so much more on your trip!
